Big Country AHEC Mission:

  • To address the health care provider shortage and improve health care access in the North and West Central Texas region through education and development of health care workforce.

AHEC Goals:

  • Introduce school-aged youth to health care careers

  • Provide rural clinical training for students in the health professions

  • Support existing health care professionals via continuing education

  • Promote healthy living

AHEC Structure:

  • Community-based center located in Abilene providing health career information services through a contract with the West Central Texas Council of Governments

  • Serves a 28 county region of North and West Central Texas (Archer, Baylor, Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Concho, Eastland, Fisher, Foard, Hardeman, Haskell, Jones, Kimble, Knox, Llano, Mason, Menard, McCulloch, Nolan, Runnels, San Saba, Shackleford, Stephens, Taylor, Throckmorton, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young).

  • Program and funding support provided by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Office of Rural and Community Health with federal and state funds

  • Annual program budget of $200,000
