Citizen
Corps:
Under the Citizen Corps Program, two programs
have been implemented: Community Emergency Response
Teams (CERT) and Neighborhood Watch Teams
(NW). The primary goal of CERT teams is to support
first responders in the event of a disaster or
emergency. This project has been able to train and
equip 17 teams. Approximately 153 CERT trained
team members are now available. In 2006, 29 new
members and three new teams were trained and equiped.
WCTCOG Regional CERT teams were utilized to assist with
disaster relief duties during the wildfires in Eastland,
Coke and Callahan Counties, Hurricane Katrina and Rita
and the Stamford and Haskell Floods, with more than 85
CERT team members from the WCTCOG Region participating.
The Neighborhood Watch program is designed to promote
community safety through citizen involvement in crime
prevention activities and programs. Last year,
three new NW teams were established and equipped
resulting in 31 new team members in the WCTCOG region.
It is anticipated that the Citizen Corps Program will
continue on, and will seek to establish new CERT teams
and Neighborhood Watch programs, as well as continue to
provide technical assistance with existing teams and
programs. |
